If you must use your card reader and computer to format your card. Do not format using Fat32. Use the drop down box choose Fat. Do not share your card with any other devices. Do not use your card to store or share files. The inconsistencies in file systems will corrupt your card.
If you must use your card reader only copy and paste from your card to your computer. If you have a card reader with the smprep.exe files you might be able to repair your own card. The smprep.exe file should be located in the installation directory for your card reader. When removing your SmartMedia card from a card reader wait a few seconds for the reading to cease. The slightest bend will crack the card internally and your data will be lost forever. We have found that improperly placed labels will force the user to push their cards into their readers or cameras causing damage to the cards.
Check your batteries. Weak or dying batteries could cause a bad write and damage your card. Do not format or delete your card in your camera if your batteries are low.
Do not fill or use all the space on your SmartMedia card when shooting or taking photos. Personally we suggest to buy smaller 64 or 32 Mb SmartMedia cards. By using several cards for taking photos you reduce the chances of losing all of your photos on that memorable vacation or event.
